The stereotype of the female surfer: how to deconstruct it?
I was so happy with the success that my article at the Origem Surf Blog from Folha de SP had, that I decided to continue the trend. In this first collab, I talked about the discomfort I feel when I almost always see the same images of the female surfer on the Instagram profiles of multinational surf brands: long golden hair, youth, white skin and thin bodies. If you haven't seen the article, click here to read it.
The first approach I would like to take is to suggest attitudes that can contribute to the deconstruction of this stereotype. This is very important, after all not all of us fit that profile considered the ideal beauty for surf companies. And we all deserve to feel represented to understand that this sport can be practiced by any one of us.
• Consider consuming products from brands that have more inclusive branding, in both products and communication strategy. There are many Brazilian brands that do this.
• On Instagram and other social networks, how about following, carefully supporting and listening to profiles that show that female surfers can be of any age, with any type of body or skin color?
• If you still don't surf and think that this sport is not for you, are we going to change that thinking? This belief was probably built and reinforced by the media and the old-fashioned advertising campaigns of surf brands.
• If you already surf, call other women to the sea, without prejudice! Believe in everyone's potential, without exception. I usually say that the only prerequisite to teach a friend how to surf is "to feel like it". If she wants to, who are you to say no? I don't know about you, but I think the more women in the water, the better.
